Don’t Boil the Ocean

Don’t Boil the Ocean
BUSINESS

Though the notion of boiling the ocean is dubious, the business professionals often insist on using this phrase but the phrase should be used carefully as its meaning in the workplace is quite vague. It is usually used in group settings to focus on an out-of-control situation.

Meaning of the phrase:
To boil the ocean means to try hard to do or get something. It is the utilization of available resources to the point of detriment. It generally means to go overboard by making a task unnecessarily difficult.

BUSINESS

Let's see the example:

Suppose a fine-tuned organization is conducting a program in which it has invited the guests from all over the world, including the famous entrepreneurs, ministers, clients and other VIPs. It is an extremely important event for the organization for the reason that this program is going to affect its brand image in the society, number of clients, popularity and also it has invested lot of efforts and money to make it a big success. On whole, the delivery of program is going to decide the return on investment for the company. Apart from the arrangements of the program, the manager enforces his team to learn the different languages in the world to impress the guests, thus boiling the ocean. It is impossible for all the employees to learn the languages in such short span of time. Moreover this will divert the focus of the employees from the arrangements to the learning. The unrealistic goal set by the manager may frustrate and disappoint the employees involved in the process. Therefore the manager is trying to boil the ocean.

  • Enlist the bullet points for the discussion
  • Conduct frequent meetings so that the employees have complete knowledge about the issue and can offer business solutions for the same

BUSINESSIn the corporate world, the work is like an ocean – appears endless. Therefore, one should avoid the temptation to boil the ocean. Make it crystal clear that all things cannot be done at a time. Develop strategies and set priorities according to their importance to the company. The sense of accomplishment will encourage the employees and create better opportunities in future.

It is impossible to boil the ocean but it is possible to boil a cup of water from the ocean, so don’t boil the entire ocean for mere cup of water. Do one task at a time and accomplish it with confidence to survive in the competitive corporate environment.

Enjoy the sense of attainment with excellence of mind!

8 things to keep in mind while sitting for the interview 1. Make sure that your introduction is impressive: In the interview , most probably the first question asked is usually “Tell me about yourself.” Take 1-2 minutes to answer this question. You should include about your qualifications, past experiences, strengths and interests related to work, etc. Don’t repeat what is already written in the resume. The recruiter wants to hear something apart from that. Your introduction is the first impression on interviewer , therefore it should grab his attention so that he takes interest in whatever you say. If he asks you speak more, then he might be testing your communication skills so you can include about your parents and their profession, siblings and other family members. Also, you can speak more about your professional experience and your style of working. 2. Make use of felicitous verbal communication: Sometimes the interviewer might appear warm and friendly to you
