Why to tackle the gender pay gap?

Why to tackle the gender pay gap?
recruitment
Unequal pay is a big issue for women in the workplace and the disparity is generally worse for women of color. The companies should take steps to embed equal pay efforts and review hiring and promotion practices to reduce unconscious bias and structural barriers. One of the issues with equal pay is that it lacks transparency, so there is typically no easy way as an employee to find out whether your salary is fair and in line with male colleagues doing the same job.

Equal pay act states:
"No employer having employees subject to any provisions of this section [section 206 of title 29 of the United States Code] shall discriminate, within any establishment in which such employees are employed, between employees on the basis of sex by paying wages to employees in such establishment at a rate less than the rate at which he pays wages to employees of the opposite sex in such establishment for equal work on jobs[,] the performance of which requires equal skill, effort, and responsibility, and which are performed under similar working conditions, except where such payment is made pursuant to (i) a seniority system; (ii) a merit system; (iii) a system which measures earnings by quantity or quality of production; or (iv) a differential based on any other factor other than sex."

The gender pay gap is difficult to measure as it is falsely framed and don’t capture the finer points of the gender pay issue such as follows:
1. They compare men and women of different jobs and pay-grades i.e. they don’t compare equal work.
2. They don’t consider gender occupational segregation.
3. They represent old data.

Ways to narrow the gender pay gap:
  • Develop negotiation training for all employees. This will help them to learn valuable skills and perform better.
  • Aim for equity pay for one new employee at a time by adjusting inequitable salaries.
  • Attract diverse talent. Don’t hire homogenous leadership teams because when a workforce becomes similar in its thinking, it closes the door on creativity.
  • Research market rates for salaries.
  • Promote gender pay gap exclusive policies. Mention your company’s maternity and paternity benefits and remote work options.

Benefits of narrowing the gender pay gap:
  1. Recruit and retain the best employees
  2. Create a positive work environment and gain the confidence of their employees
  3. Make the best use of human resources and improve productivity and competitiveness
  4. Better public image and higher shareholder value and a wider and more satisfied customer base
  5. Gives greater profitability to the economy as a whole
  6. Promotes social justice and equal opportunities

The gender pay gap grows through a small series. The awareness and the drive to make small changes will go a long way in narrowing the gap because the rewards of an equally-paid workforce are huge. It will make you more equitable, diverse and profitable company if you narrow your gap and treat your female employees fairly. Closing the gender pay gap can help to create a more equal and cohesive society. Valuing women's work and skills will motivate their performance and improve their economic independence.

8 things to keep in mind while sitting for the interview

8 things to keep in mind while sitting for the interview 1. Make sure that your introduction is impressive: In the interview , most probably the first question asked is usually “Tell me about yourself.” Take 1-2 minutes to answer this question. You should include about your qualifications, past experiences, strengths and interests related to work, etc. Don’t repeat what is already written in the resume. The recruiter wants to hear something apart from that. Your introduction is the first impression on interviewer , therefore it should grab his attention so that he takes interest in whatever you say. If he asks you speak more, then he might be testing your communication skills so you can include about your parents and their profession, siblings and other family members. Also, you can speak more about your professional experience and your style of working. 2. Make use of felicitous verbal communication: Sometimes the interviewer might appear warm and friendly to you

Don’t Boil the Ocean

Don’t Boil the Ocean Though the notion of boiling the ocean is dubious, the business professionals often insist on using this phrase but t he phrase should be used carefully as its meaning in the workplace is quite vague. It is usually used in group settings to focus on an out-of-control situation. Meaning of the phrase: To boil the ocean means to try hard to do or get something. It is the utilization of available resources to the point of detriment. It generally means to go overboard by making a task unnecessarily difficult. Let's see the example: Suppose a fine-tuned organization is conducting a program in which it has invited the guests from all over the world, including the famous entr epreneurs , ministers, clients and other VIPs.
